Death has always been considered the last stage of life. The common belief has been that as soon as the heart stops beating, a person’s consciousness also ends. But now a new scientific study has challenged this thinking. Research has indicated that even after heart failure, the brain can remain active for some time and the person can be aware of information around him. This claim is not only surprising, but also forces us to rethink our understanding of life and death.
What does the new study say?
This study has been published in the journal ‘Resuscitation’. It has been told that in some of the patients whose heart had stopped beating and who were declared clinically dead, brain activity was recorded during resuscitation i.e. CPR. According to researchers, in some cases, signals of gamma, delta, theta, alpha and beta brain waves were found in the EEG 35 to 60 minutes after the heart stopped. These are the same waves that are normally associated with thinking and awareness.
Research led by Dr. Sam Pernia
This research was led by Dr. Sam Pernia of NYU Langone Medical Center, New York. His team studied 53 patients who survived cardiac arrest in 25 hospitals in the US and Britain. Many patients reported that even when their heart was not beating, they still experienced certain memories and experiences. Dr. Pernia says that earlier it was believed that permanent damage occurs to the brain about 10 minutes after the heart stops, but research has found that the brain can show signs of electrical recovery even during CPR.

40 percent people felt awareness
About 40 percent of the participants in the study said that they felt some level of awareness. Some people reported that they felt as if they were separated from their body and were seeing or understanding what was happening in the hospital room. Researchers say that these experiences were different from dreams, hallucinations or illusions.
