India’s foreign intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) is considered to be the eye and ear of the country. It was established in 1968 and since then this agency has been playing an important role in India’s security, strategy and foreign intelligence matters. But often there is a question in the minds of people, how do raw agents become? Is there any direct recruitment for this or is there a special secret way of selection?
How to become a raw agent
Actually, there is no direct recruitment in RAW. To become a raw agent, it is necessary to be in any other government service beforehand. Mainly for this, experienced officers of civil services, armed forces (Army, Navy, Air Force), Para Military Forces, IB (Intelligence Bureau) and Central Services (IAS, IPS, IRS, etc.) are selected. The most recruitment is from IPS and IB. Apart from this, many times Group-A level officers are taken on deputation through RAW’s front organization ‘Research and Analysis Services (RAS)’.
How is recruitment
To go to RAW, the candidate first has to take admission in any prestigious government service through UPSC Civil Services Examination or Defense Services Examination (CDS). After this, they have to gain service experience for a few years. If the officer’s qualifications, records, privacy and analytical abilities stand up on the standards of the RAW, then it is called through the Intelligence Bureau (IB) through the internal screening process. Many times a separate contract basis is also done under the Cabinet Secretariat, but they are very limited and confidential.

So if someone dreams of becoming a raw agent, then the first step is to pass the exam like UPSC, CDS or CAPF, then to honestly serve government for years and only then be a part of the selection process. The job in RAW is not only challenging but it is a field where it is the biggest honor for the country to work quietly. Without any fame and without any open identity.
