What is ectopic pregnancy?
In a normal pregnancy, when the egg and sperm meet, the fertilized egg travels through the fallopian tube and reaches the uterus. There it sticks and the development of the child begins, but in ectopic pregnancy this fertilized egg is unable to reach the uterus and stops at a wrong place on the way. In most cases it gets stuck in the fallopian tube itself. For this reason it is also called tubal pregnancy. The fallopian tube is not made for the development of a child, hence this condition is considered very dangerous.
How does the embryo lodge in the fallopian tube?
Every month one egg is released from a woman’s ovary. This egg reaches the fallopian tube, where it meets the sperm and fertilization occurs. After fertilization, this egg slowly moves towards the uterus through the fallopian tube. Small hair-like structures (cilia) present inside the tube help in this. If for some reason there is swelling, contraction, blockage in the fallopian tube or the tube is damaged, then the embryo is unable to move forward and gets stuck in the tube. Reasons for embryo retention in fallopian tube
Any previous infection or pelvic inflammatory disease, previous surgery, endometriosis, previous history of ectopic pregnancy, IVF or fertility treatment, smoking habit and hormonal imbalance can cause the embryo to stay in the fallopian tube.
How much danger does this pose to the mother’s life?
1. Life threatening situation – Ectopic pregnancy can be a serious and life-threatening condition. If there is no timely treatment, it can take the woman’s life.
2. Burst of tube – As the fetus grows, the pressure on the fallopian tube increases. At some point the tube may burst.
3. Internal bleeding – When the tube bursts, there is severe bleeding inside the stomach, which is not visible from outside but is very dangerous.
4. Fainting and shock- Due to excessive bleeding, the woman may become unconscious, blood pressure may fall and a state of medical shock may occur.
