Tariq Rahman was born on 20 November 1965 in Dhaka. He comes from a prominent political family. His father Ziaur Rahman was the seventh President of Bangladesh. His mother Khaleda Zia has been the Prime Minister of the country twice and was also the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Tariq Rahman is considered a strong face of Bangladesh Nationalist Party i.e. BNP. He is the chairman of the party since January 2026. Even before this, he had held many important posts in the party.

Tariq Rahman did his early studies in Dhaka. In his childhood, he studied at BAF Shaheen College, Dhaka. After this he passed the SSC examination from Dhaka Residential Model College. For further studies, he did HSC from Adamji Cantonment College. He started taking interest in politics since his school and college days.

For higher education, Tariq Rahman took admission in Dhaka University. First he took admission in the Law Department, later he studied in the International Relations Department. Dhaka University is considered the leading educational institution of the country. It was during his studies here that his political inclination became stronger. However, his political life has been discussed more than his studies. Yet his educational background gave him an understanding of politics.
Initial steps in politics
Tariq Rehman started politics in the year 1988 as a primary member of BNP. He played an active role for the party during the 1991 elections. At that time the country was transitioning from military rule to democratic government. He played an important role in handling the election campaign of his mother Khaleda Zia. He was also a member of the National Campaign Strategy Committee of the party.
Exile and controversy
BNP faced defeat in the 2008 general elections and Awami League formed the government. After this Tariq Rehman went to London. He said that his security is under threat and political pressure is being put on him.
In 2018, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in the 2004 Dhaka grenade attack case. After this decision he remained in more controversies. His opponents have been accusing him of corruption and favoritism.
