Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Monday (January 12, 2026) has given a big update regarding the trade deal between India and the European Union (EU). He said that India’s negotiations on a trade agreement with the European Union are in the final stages. He also said that we are also in talks with America regarding a bilateral trade deal.
India-EU talks continue regarding FTA
The Union Minister has given this statement in the Regional MSME Conclave during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference organized in Rajkot district of Gujarat. Goyal recently returned from Brussels, where he held talks with EU Trade and Economic Security Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). India’s effort in the FTA with the EU is to provide zero duty access to labour-intensive sectors, which include textiles, leather, apparel, gems and jewelery and handicrafts.

What did Sergio Gore say about trade with India?
This statement of Goyal has come at a time when recently appointed US Ambassador Sergio Gore in New Delhi said that India and America are continuously talking on trade deal and the next meeting is proposed on Tuesday (January 13, 2026).
While talking to staff and journalists while taking charge at the US Embassy, Gore said that US President Donald Trump has sent good wishes for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said, ‘The friendship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Donald Trump is genuine and the relationship between India and America is not only focused on mutual interests, but is also bound by relationships built at the highest level.’

He further said, ‘True friends may disagree on many issues, but in the end they resolve their differences.’ According to Gore, trade between India and America is very important and apart from this, both the countries will continue to work together on issues like security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education and health.
