For the first time in Delhi AIIMS, eye cancer was treated with Gama Nife Radiation Technology. This cancer of the eye is called retinoblastoma, which makes children under five years of age their victims. Delhi AIIMS performed this eyes of a 4 -year -old child on May 15. Now the question arises that how is the treatment of cancer from Gama Knife and how safe it is?
How Gamma Nife works?
Gamma Knife is an advanced radiosurgery technology. It treats brain tumors, metastatic tumors and other neurological problems such as trigeminal neurolzia and arteriovenus malformation (AVM) using the exact beam of gamma rays. In this technique, there is no need to open or make an incision of sculls (skulls) like traditional surgery. In this, the tumor is destroyed using the exact radiation beams and there is no harm to the healthy tissue around it.
Is there any kind of knife gamma knife?
Hearing the name of Gama Knife, it may seem that a knife is used in it, whereas it is not so. It is a completely non-invasive process. This technique was first developed by Sweden’s Neurosurgeon Laers Laksel in the 1960s. & Nbsp;
How cancer is treated with gamma nife?
The process of gamma knife radiosurgery is completed in many stages. In this, a light stereotactic head frame is first applied on the patient’s head, which keeps the head stable and helps in accurately target radiation beams. Local anesthesia is used in this process, so that the patient does not hurt. & Nbsp;
This is the second stage of treatment
After applying the head frame, the patient’s MRI or CT scan is done. Angiography can also be done in the treatment of some cases like AVM. Now the multidisiplinary team of neurosurgeon, radiation oncologist and medical physicists prepare treatment plans with the help of 3D computer software. It is decided that how many doses of radiation are to be given from which angle, so that the tumor can be destroyed. & Nbsp;
Surgery occurs in this stage
After the plan is made, the patient is brought to the gamma knife machine and lying on a bed. His head is fixed in a coalimator helmet inside the machine, after which the machine focuses on the tumor of 192 gamma rays on the tumor. This process usually lasts from 15 minutes to an hour. Gamma Knife Radio Riosurgery is considered to be safe and effective technology worldwide.
