Ideal time to poop: Every person has to go to the toilet, but the time taken for this task tells a lot about your digestive power and health. This is not just a routine but a matter related to the rhythm, balance and hidden signals of the body. Gastroenterologists often consider time taken to defecate as a small but important measure of digestive health. Let us tell you that staying in the toilet for more than how many minutes can be a threat to health.

not too early, not too late

Dr Amit Miglani, director and HOD of the gastroenterology department of Asian Hospital, told TOI that the ideal time for defecation should be a few minutes and it should not be more than 10 minutes. If a person finishes in less than a minute, it may mean that the food is not being completely digested. At the same time, if you have to strain while sitting for 15 to 20 minutes, then it is a sign of constipation, that is, the intestines are struggling to expel the toxic substances from the body properly.

Sitting for a long time can increase the risk

Sitting on the toilet for a long time puts pressure on the veins of the anus, which can cause discomfort or problems like piles. Nowadays people wait while scrolling or reading on the phone, while doing so is harmful for both habit and posture. The right way is to sit only when the body signals itself and not to waste time.

body clock and defecation time

Our digestion system runs on a natural rhythm. Most people feel the urge to defecate within 30 minutes of waking up in the morning or after eating. This is called gastrocolic reflex. If this signal is repeatedly ignored, this reflex can weaken, making defecation irregular and difficult. The thing to keep in mind is that regularity does not mean how many times you go every day, but how easily and comfortably you go. Some people go once a day, some every other day, both are fine, provided the stool is soft, easy to pass and does not take much time.

Habits That Help You

  • Drink adequate amount of water throughout the day so that the stool remains soft.
  • Eat fiber rich food like fruits, vegetables, oats and pulses.
  • Make it a habit to defecate at a fixed time, especially after eating.
  • While sitting in the toilet, use a stool to raise your legs a little, this straightens the intestines and allows stool to pass easily.
  • Reduce stress, as there is a direct connection between the brain and the gut which affects digestion.

When to take doctor’s advice?

If defecation regularly takes more than 10 minutes, or there is problem of pain, bleeding and excessive straining, it is important to consult a specialist.
