After the new rules of UGC, people coming from Swarna Samaj protested across the country. The matter will be heard in the Supreme Court on January 29, in which the court put a stay on the new rules and asked to keep the 2012 rules in effect. According to reports, 56 central universities are currently operating in the country. Central universities are in almost every part of the country. From North India to South, from Northeast to West. Central universities are present in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Bihar, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rajasthan, Punjab, Odisha, West Bengal and North-Eastern states.
Most of these universities come under the Ministry of Education, while some special universities work under other ministries. According to the data available till the year 2022-23, among the Vice-Chancellors of 45 Central Universities of the country, 1 Vice-Chancellor comes from Scheduled Caste (SC), 1 Vice-Chancellor from Scheduled Tribe (ST), 7 Vice-Chancellors from Other Backward Classes (OBC).
