About Rs 2,000 crore has been spent so far on cleaning the Yamuna river. The Central Government made a big disclosure in the Lok Sabha regarding the cleanliness of Yamuna River. In a written reply, the government said that a total amount of more than Rs 1,951 crore has been spent so far for the conservation, pollution control and revival of Yamuna river.
In response, the Central Government has said that this expenditure has been done with the cooperation of various central schemes and states. The government said that this amount has been mainly spent on works like construction of sewage treatment plants (STP), upgradation of old plants, sewerage network expansion and pollution monitoring. This fund was released under different projects in Yamuna related states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.
Attention given to various types of treatments in projects
According to information given to the Lok Sabha, many projects have been approved in the Yamuna Basin under the National Clean Ganga Mission and other central schemes. In these, special attention has been given to increasing sewage treatment capacity, control of industrial waste and treatment of drains falling into the river. According to the government, the aim of these efforts is to stop the flow of dirty water into Yamuna without treatment.
Along with the Center and the State, the role of local bodies is also important.
The government has also made it clear that cleaning the Yamuna is a continuous and long-term process, in which the central and state governments as well as local bodies have an important role. The quality of river water is being regularly monitored by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), so that the status of improvement can be assessed.
However, the government has admitted that more efforts are still needed for the expected improvement in the condition of Yamuna. In the coming times, work is being done on new projects, better waste management and further strengthening of coordination between the states, so that Yamuna can be made clean and uninterrupted.
