Keeping weapons in India is not just a question of status or security. The common citizen has to take a license under the law to keep a gun with him in India. But the question also comes as to how many guns a person can have and for this the rules are necessary to follow. Many rules and guidelines have also been given in this case in Arms Act 1959 and Arms Bill 2019.
Number of common citizens and weapons
Earlier, the common citizen was allowed to keep maximum three guns. But after the change in the common arms bill 2019, only two guns can be kept with the common citizens. Those who already had three weapons have to deposit the extra gun with the police. Apart from this, there are separate process of new licenses for any extra weapon.
Rules for shooters and professionals
Some different rules are applicable for national and state level shooters. Based on the recommendation of the National Rifle Association of India, they are allowed to keep more weapons for competition and testing. At the same time, there is no limit for award winning shooters, while shooters participating in general competition can keep more and more weapons. At the same time, it is necessary to apply to the licensing department by taking a recommendation letter from NRAI for each weapon.
How much is the quota of bullets
There are also rules on the number of bullets along with weapons. Common license holders can buy 100 bullets at a time and 200 annually 200 pills. At the same time, this quota has been increased according to the competition and testing for the shooters. In this, the shooters who qualify in the national level competition get a quota of one lakh bullets annually, while this quota is 50 thousand for state level contestants.
Punishment for violating rules
The license can be canceled if weapons are misused by arms or bullets such as using weapons to intimidate others. At the same time, on the orders of the administration on elections or special occasions, weapons have to be deposited in the police station or police line. Currently the duration of gun license is 5 years. Apart from this, license holders have to keep only one license, if someone has two or more weapons, then action can be taken on them.
