PM Modi Manipur Visit: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a tour of Manipur on 13 September 2025 today. This is his first visit after the 2023 violence. Please tell that Manipur is a beautiful north-eastern state of India which is full of cultural prosperity and historical significance. But for the last two years, the tension between Cookie and Maetai communities has created problems for the state here, this struggle is about land, resources and identity. According to the 2011 census, the total population of Manipur was around 28.56 lakhs of which is 15 lakh Maetai and about 7-8 lakh cookies while the rest are of Naga and other groups.

How much is the population of Maetai

Maetai community is the largest part of the state’s population, usually they are called Manipuri. According to the 2011 Jananga, 64.60 percent of the population of Manipur is from the Maetai community. They mainly live in the Imphal Valley, which cover only 10 percent of the state’s area. On the other hand, 35.40 percent of the population are cookie, Naga and other tribes. They are settled in hilly areas, which surround 90 percent of the state’s area. Naga and Cookie are mainly Christians. According to the 2011 census, the population of Hindus and Christians in Manipur is about 41 percent.

Which religion does Maetai believe

Mayetai people mainly believe in Hinduism. In the 2011 census, the total Hindus of Manipur were 41 percent, most of which are Maetai. In Maetai, some people also believe in Muslim religion which are called pangals but their population is very low, the total Muslim population is 8.4 percent. The people of Maetai dominate the politics, economy and culture of the state. They are strong in farming, trade and government jobs. But in the hilly areas, Maetai people can neither settle nor buy land.

Cookie population

Talking about the cookie community, they are almost completely Christians. The total Christians in Manipur are 41 percent, mostly cookie and Naga tribes. 97–98 percent people in the Cookie community are Christians. Hindu or Muslim cookies are very few. Cookie people live in hilly districts, most are associated with farming, horticulture and small businesses.
