Its technical demo (TD-1) was first flown in 2001. Later in 2016, its series production version (SP-2) was successfully flown. Tejas has been designed as a 4.5-generation fighter aircraft, which can perform well from air missions to ground operations. It is considered to be the lightest and smallest aircraft in its class, and the heavy use of composite materials in its structure makes it agile. The first Tejas squadron of the Indian Air Force was named Flying Daggers (No. 45).
