A shocking case has come to light from Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. Here a surgeon has been accused of murdering his own wife. According to the police, the doctor gave an overdose of anesthesia to his wife on the pretext of treatment, due to which she died. This incident happened in April, but now after the forensic report comes, the whole matter has been transformed from unnatural death to murder case.
In the forensic report, a drug called propofol has been found in the woman’s body, which is an intravenous anesthetic and is usually given to render the patient unconscious during operations. After this incident, the question is being raised that what is the normal dose of anesthesia and how much dose can it prove fatal. In such a situation, let us tell you today how much anesthesia is given to a normal person and at what dose he can die.
What is anesthesia?
Anesthesia is given to the patient to provide relief from pain during surgery, but its quantity is decided very carefully. The doctor decides how much anesthesia to give by looking at the patient’s weight, age and health condition. According to experts, the dose of anesthesia is decided according to per kilogram body weight. While some medicines are given according to total body weight, some are given according to lean body mass. If the patient’s condition is serious or his age is high, then the dose is kept less, so that blood pressure is not affected.
In which condition is the dose reduced?
If the patient’s blood pressure is low or too much blood has been lost from the body, then anesthesia is given in very small amounts because if given in large amounts, both the heartbeat and blood pressure can fall to dangerous levels, which can also lead to the death of the patient.
After how many days can death occur?
Generally, the amount of anesthesia given in surgery is considered safe, but in case of overdose it can prove fatal. According to experts, the risk of death from anesthesia in a healthy person is only one in 1 lakh people. However, if the patient already has heart, kidney or lung disease, his body is not able to tolerate anesthesia. In this situation, even a small amount can cause conditions like heart arrest or brain bleed.
