Mumbai is the economic capital of the country and its local government i.e. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is counted among the largest municipal corporations in Asia. In such a situation, this question often arises in the minds of people that how much salary do the councilors of Mumbai Municipal Corporation get and what facilities are given to them. Councilors are the smallest but very important link of the city, who are directly connected with the public and convey their problems to the administration. Let us know how much honorarium and what facilities they get.
The councilors of Mumbai Municipal Corporation are not given any big salary. They get a fixed honorarium every month. In July 2017, BMC had decided to increase the honorarium of councilors. Earlier, councilors used to get Rs 10,000 per month, but in view of rising inflation and workload, it was increased to Rs 25,000 per month. This decision was taken because inflation had increased significantly since 2010 and councilors have to carry out frequent visits, meetings and public-related responsibilities in their areas.
Is this a fixed salary?
The biggest thing about the salary of BMC councilors is that it is not a completely fixed salary. The amount received by councilors is often linked to their work, participation in meetings and other government programs. Traveling allowance to meetings, allowance for special meetings and some other expenses are reimbursed separately.
What are the facilities available apart from salary?
Councilors are given not only honorarium but also many other facilities. The most important among these is the annual fund. Every councilor is given a fixed amount for the development works of his ward. This fund is used for roads, drains, street lights, water, sanitation and other important works. This amount may vary from ward to ward.
Apart from this, councilors also get meeting allowance for attending meetings. This allowance is given to them when they attend the meetings of the Standing Committee, General Assembly and other committees of the Municipal Corporation. This allowance is also a part of their total income. Councilors are also given traveling allowance for commuting between their ward and the Municipal Corporation headquarters.
