Every day lakhs of passengers travel by trains and it is the responsibility of the loco pilot to take them to their destination safely. Loco pilot is also called train driver in common language, but his responsibility is not limited to just driving the train. They have to take full care of signals, track conditions and safety rules. How much salary do you get?
In Railways, one usually starts from the post of Assistant Loco Pilot. According to the Seventh Pay Commission, the initial basic salary of an Assistant Loco Pilot is around Rs 19,900 per month. After experience and promotion, when employees become senior loco pilots, their basic salary increases from Rs 35,000 to Rs 60,000 or more. Apart from the basic salary, many types of allowances are added, due to which the total in-hand salary ranges from around Rs 40,000. It becomes around Rs 80,000 per month.
What allowances are available?
Many types of additional allowances are included in the salary of a loco pilot, such as Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance, Night Duty Allowance, Overtime Payment, Running Allowance (based on kilometers of train running), due to all these allowances there is a good increase in the total salary. Loco pilots working in long distance trains get more salary than the running allowance.
What facilities are available?
Apart from salary, many important facilities are also given to railway employees. Free or concessional rail travel where available, government accommodation, medical facilities in railway hospital, pension and gratuity, some special benefits for children’s education. Due to these facilities, this job is considered safe and permanent.
How is the work and duty time?
The duty of a loco pilot is done during the day or night as per the shift. Many times he has to run the train continuously for several hours. The responsibility increases even more in long distance trains. They have to be alert all the time, because the safety of thousands of passengers is in their hands. Therefore, rigorous training and medical fitness is mandatory for this post. Eyesight, hearing ability and mental balance are regularly checked.
