Is the salary of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs different?
First of all, let it be clear that there is no difference in the basic salary of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs. Members of both houses get equal salaries. After the amendment effective from April 1, 2023, each MP is given a basic salary of approximately Rs 1,24,000 to Rs 1,25,000 per month. Earlier this amount was Rs 1,00,000, which has been increased by about 24 percent. That means, in terms of salary, Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha MPs are at par. No one gets more or less.
What are the allowances available apart from salary?
Apart from the basic salary, MPs also get many types of allowances. He is given a daily allowance of Rs 2,500 per day during the Parliament session or when he attends any official meeting. This allowance is available only for those days when MPs participate in proceedings. Apart from this, Rs 75,000 is received every month for office expenses. Of this, approximately Rs 50,000 is fixed for the salary of the staff and Rs 25,000 is fixed for stationery and other office needs.
Lok Sabha MPs also get regional allowance for the work of their constituency, which is approximately Rs 87,000 per month. This amount is spent on public relations and administrative activities in the area.
Accommodation, travel and other facilities
MPs are given the facility of government accommodation in Delhi. If they wish, they can take a bungalow or opt for house allowance. Apart from this, they get the facility of 34 free air trips in a year. First class facility is also available in train travel. Talking about health facilities, the MP and his family get free treatment under the CGHS scheme. Electricity and water facilities are also provided free of cost up to a certain limit.
How is salary decided?
The salary of MPs is decided under the law passed by the Parliament. It is amended from time to time. The increase in 2023 was also part of this process. The government makes changes keeping in mind inflation and other economic conditions.
