A question often comes in the minds of youth who dream of making a career in space science. How much salary does a research scientist working in NASA get and is it more than ISRO? India’s ISRO and America’s NASA, both are well-known space agencies in the world. Let us know some special things related to these…

NASA i.e. National Aeronautics and Space Administration is America’s government space agency. Research scientists, engineers, astronauts and technical experts work here. The job of a research scientist in NASA is to plan new missions, conduct space-related experiments and develop new technology.

Salary of research scientist in NASA

The salary of a research scientist in NASA is decided on the government salary structure of America. There salary is given in dollars. Generally, a research scientist can get an annual salary of around $70,000 to $1,50,000.

If we convert it into Indian Rupees, then this amount comes to around Rs 58 lakh to Rs 1.25 crore annually. With increasing experience and reaching a senior position, the salary can become even higher. Apart from this, many facilities are also available in NASA, like health insurance, research fund, paid leave and retirement benefits.

How much salary do you get in ISRO?

Now let’s talk about India’s ISRO. Recruitment of new scientists in ISRO is usually done on the post of Scientist/Engineer ‘SC’. The basic salary of this post is around Rs 56,100 per month. When dearness allowance, house allowance and other government allowances are added to it, the total salary reaches approximately Rs 80,000 to Rs 1 lakh per month. That means the annual earning is around Rs 9 to 12 lakh. With increasing experience, one gets promotion in ISRO and salary also increases.

Why is there so much difference between the salaries of NASA and ISRO?

The biggest reason is the difference in economic condition and currency of the countries. America’s economy is much bigger than India and the salary level there is also higher. Since the value of the dollar is much higher than the Indian rupee, NASA’s salary sounds huge.

The second reason is cost of living. In America, the cost of housing, food, health and education is very high. Whereas in India the salary of ISRO may be less, but the cost of living here is also less.
