Voting was held on Sunday for the by-elections of 12 wards in Delhi. Voting was peaceful and there was no news of any kind of chaos or technical fault in the machines anywhere. Voting, which started at 7:30 am, ended at 5:30 pm, after which the fate of a total of 51 candidates, including 26 women, has now been decided in the EVMs. The results are going to come on 3rd December, on which the eyes of entire Delhi are fixed.

Along with the discussion about by-elections, the salary and facilities of ward members i.e. MCD councilors in Delhi are also in discussion. According to reports, a councilor of Delhi Municipal Corporation gets an annual package of around Rs 4.9 lakh, which means a salary of around Rs 41,000 every month. Apart from this, councilors are also given many allowances, which include meeting allowance, travel related facilities and office related expenses.

How much fund do you get?

The most interesting thing is that every councilor gets a fund of up to Rs 1 crore for the development of his ward. This fund is spent on repairing roads, cleaning drains, maintaining parks and other local works. However, many times councilors are not able to utilize these funds on time because funds are released only when they start a project.

These are the rules?

Now let’s talk about the rules of becoming a councilor. It is necessary for any candidate to have his name in the voter list of his ward. Age should be at least 21 years and education should be minimum 10th pass. Along with this, he should be a valid voter of Delhi. The work of MCD councilor is a very responsible one. They have to keep an eye on every small and big issue, from cleanliness to maintenance of roads, drains, parks and public properties.
