The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has given him the prestigious ‘Champions of the Earth’ award for the year 2025. He has received this honor in the ‘Inspiration and Work’ category. More than three decades of administrative experience

UNEP has given this honor to Supriya Sahu for improving the environment in Tamil Nadu, fighting climate change and promoting non-pollution cooling technology. Change started from Nilgiri
In the initial phase of her career, Supriya Sahu was the collector of Nilgiri district. During this time, he launched a big campaign named ‘Operation Blue Mountain’. The objective of this campaign was to free the Nilgiri region from single-use plastic. This campaign was so successful that a change was seen in people’s thinking and habits.
Name recorded in Guinness World Records
During ‘Operation Blue Mountain’, the maximum number of trees were planted in a single day. This effort created a Guinness World Record and this record was registered in the name of IAS Supriya Sahu. This achievement is considered a great example of his grassroots efforts and leadership ability.
There is a special relationship with Uttar Pradesh
IAS Supriya Sahu was born on 27 July 1968. After his early studies and graduation, he studied MSc in Botany from Lucknow University, Uttar Pradesh. It was during his studies that he developed a deep connection with the environment and nature.
Journey from UPSC to IAS
Supriya Sahu passed the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1989. After completing her training, she became a 1991 batch IAS officer and got Tamil Nadu cadre. After this, he created his own identity by working in different districts and departments.
‘Meendum Manjappai’ became a habit of people
Another big initiative of Supriya Sahu regarding the environment was ‘Meendum Manjappai’, which means “yellow bag again”. Through this campaign he promoted the use of cloth bags instead of plastic. This campaign became so popular that even common people started joining it.
Has held many big positions
Presently Supriya Sahu is the Additional Chief Secretary in the Environment, Climate Change and Forest Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Before this, she had also been the Director General of Doordarshan on deputation from the Central Government. Apart from this, he has also played important responsibilities in the Health and Family Welfare Department.
Steps towards Green Tamil Nadu
Under his leadership, work has been done towards planting more than 100 million trees, creating 65 new reserve forests and doubling the mangrove area in Tamil Nadu. He believes that to fight climate change, both the government and society will have to work together.
