Ghee is called ‘Ghrit’ in Ayurveda, which is an integral part of Indian kitchen and medicinal traditions. It not only enhances the taste of food, but also has benefits like improving its digestion, better absorption of nutrients and lubricating joints. However, a question that often comes to the mind of people is that how long does it take to digest after eating a teaspoon of ghee? Based on research and Ayurvedic principles so far, how and in how long the digestion of ghee is?

What is ghee?

By heating the butter available from milk, the substance made by removing water, milk solids and other dirt from it is called ghee or clarified butter. This process makes ghee pure and stable, so that it does not deteriorate even at high temperatures and can be kept for a long time. Ghee mainly contains soluble vitamins like saturated fat, medium chain fatty acids, vitamins A, D, E, and K. It also contains butyric acid, which is beneficial for the intestines.

How is ghee digestion?

Ghee is broken into the body as lipids during digestion. When you eat one teaspoon of ghee, it passes in many stage in the digestive system. Digestion of ghee starts from the mouth, where saliva moists food. However, if the amount of protein and carbohydrates in ghee is very low, then its digestion in the mouth is minimal. The enzyme called gastric lipase in the stomach partially breaks triglycerides present in ghee. This process is slow, because the main digestion of the lipid is in the small intestine. Ghee in the stomach can last about 2-4 hours, it depends on whether it is taken on an empty stomach or with food.

These processes also work

Ghee is broken into monoglycerides and fatty acids with the help of pancreatic lipase and bile, secreted from pancreas in the small intestine. These small molecules are absorbed by the intestine walls. Medium chain fatty acids present in ghee are rapidly absorbed, as they require less bile than long chain fatty acids. The absorbed fatty acids and monoglycerides are found in bloodflows and metabolles in the liver. Medium chain fatty acids rapidly converts the liver into energy, making it easier to digest and use ghee.

How much time does it take to digest ghee?

Based on research and Ayurvedic literature so far, one teaspoon of ghee (about 14 grams) can take an average of 4 to 6 hours to completely digest. On taking ghee on an empty stomach, it rapidly reaches the small intestine from the stomach, so that the digestive process can be completed in 3-5 hours. If you eat ghee with heavy food, it can take 6 hours or more to digest.
