A new chapter in Nepal’s judicial history was added when Sushila Karki, who has been the first female chief judge of the country, was recently appointed acting Prime Minister. This post is now not only acceptance of his judicial experience, but also a growing step towards the nation operation under the leadership of a woman. Sushila Karki’s visit has emerged as an inspiration for women from a judge to the Prime Minister, in political and administrative areas. We will tell you how much his salary was earlier and now how much salary he will get after becoming the caretaker PM.
How much was salary before retirement?
Sushila Karki took charge as the first female Chief Justice of Nepal in 2016 and became a symbol of honesty, transparency and boldness in the judiciary. According to the gazette published by the Government of Nepal just before retirement in 2023, the monthly salary of the Chief Justice was fixed at Rs 102,293. How much will the salary be as the caretaker Prime Minister?
According to Nepal’s current pay structure, the monthly salary of the Prime Minister is around Rs 94,280. This includes the basic salary of 77,280, dearness allowance of 2,000, communication allowance of Rs 5,000 and hospitality allowance of Rs 10,000. Apart from this, the Prime Minister also gets many special facilities, such as 306 liters of monthly petrol, travel allowance 3,000 per day and team of 34 staff members (including advisors, secretaries and other colleagues).
However, under a new law passed in August 2025, the Prime Minister and ministers have now got the right to decide their salaries and allowances. This decision was taken by the Cabinet of the Government of Nepal and it was published in the official budget. But until the new rates are determined, the old salary structure will remain in force.
From judiciary to executive
Sushila Karki’s image has been a harsh, but just woman. During his tenure, he gave many important and politically sensitive decisions. She was one of the selected judges standing against corruption, against whom political forces tried to bring impeachment which failed. Let us tell you that Gen-Z leaders held a virtual meeting with Sushila Karki for about 5 hours. During this time, the situation and the challenges of the country were discussed. Sushila Karki got 58 percent votes in voting after this meeting, while Balen Shah has got only 32 percent votes.
