As soon as the winter season arrives, coolness, hot food, sunbathing and comfortable blankets, all this gets included in our daily life. In this season, there is less sweating, the body remains cool and there is very little thirst. It often happens that we spend the whole day but do not remember to drink water. Whereas in summer, we drink water again and again as soon as it feels even a little hot. But do you know that even in winter, the body needs the same amount of water as it drinks in summer. Even in winter, your body works the same internally, and water is essential for every system to run properly. How much water should one drink daily in winter compared to summer?
We feel less thirsty in winter, but the body’s need for water remains the same as in summer. According to experts, a normal and healthy person should drink about 8–10 glasses i.e. 2 to 2.5 liters of water daily. For people who have less physical activity and who work sitting at home or office most of the time, it is considered appropriate to drink about 2 liters of water. People who are more active, do regular exercise or work outside, should drink 10 to 12 glasses i.e. 2.5 to 3 liters of water daily so that the body remains hydrated. At the same time, thirst is less in cold weather, hence it is important to adopt drinking water as a habit, otherwise the body can easily become deficient in water.
Why is it important to drink water in winter
1. The body needs water from inside, no matter the season – In winter we sweat less, hence it seems as if we need less water. But every part of the body always needs water in equal quantity to function properly. If water is less then dehydration can occur which happens silently in winter and we do not even realize it.
2. Skin gets moisture – The air is dry in winter, due to which problems like skin cracking, dryness and itching increase. Water maintains moisture in the skin and makes it hydrated and glowing.
3. Digestion remains healthy – In winter, people eat more fried, heavy and spicy food. Eating like this increases the chances of constipation. In such a situation, drinking enough water daily improves digestion, prevents constipation and keeps the stomach light.
4. Immune system becomes stronger – Cold and flu are more common in winter. In such a situation, water helps in removing toxins from the body, which increases immunity and reduces the chances of falling sick again and again.
5. Body temperature remains balanced – Water is the body’s natural thermoregulator. Water plays an important role in keeping the body warm from inside in winter. Therefore, if water is less then the body will start getting tired quickly and will feel more cold.
6. Stiffness in joints and muscles is reduced – In winter, many people feel pain, stiffness or stiffness in the joints. Water provides lubrication to the joints, which makes movement of the joints easier, reduces pain and keeps the muscles strong.
