After taking medicine, where does it go in the body, which organs and which cells does it affect? This has been a big challenge for medical science till now. Usually, scientists used to find out which organ the medicine reached, but it was not clear which cells inside that organ the medicine was attaching to. Now a new technology has emerged to open this black box. In such a situation, let us now tell you how the medicines open step by step in the body and now how the doctor will be able to see the dissolution of the medicines step by step.
Effect of medicine will be visible at single cell level
Scientists at America’s Scripps Research Institute have developed a new imaging technology named vCATCH. With the help of this technology, the journey of the medicine in the body can be seen at the level of each cell. That means, where the medicine is sticking and affecting any cell will be clearly visible than before. Whereas in the methods used till now, the quantity of the drug could be measured, but it was difficult to find out which specific cells the drug was binding to. Many times medicines affect those places where they should not have an effect. Older methods were poor at capturing these unwanted effects.
How does vCATCH work?
In vCATCH, claims are linked to a specific chemical tag. After this, using a technique called click chemistry, the places where the drug is attached are illuminated with fluorescent markers. With this, the path of the drug and its effect inside the entire organ can be clearly seen. This technique was tested on rats with two cancer drugs, ibrutinib and afatinib. After which the research revealed that Ibrutinib was not only connecting to its target but also to the cells of the heart and blood vessels. At the same time, scientists believe that this could be the reason why heart related problems are seen in some patients due to this medicine.
Will help in understanding the side effects of medicines
With the help of vCATCH, it will now be easy to understand why a medicine has side effects. Doctors and researchers will be able to see where the medicine is having unwanted effects and accordingly the medicines can be made safer. Scientists say that with this technology, testing of new medicines will be more accurate. Especially before bringing the medicines present in the last stage in the market, it can be seen whether they are affecting the right target or not. This will help in making the treatment more safe and effective.
