There are mainly three types of courses available to become a nurse in a government hospital.

  • BSc Nursing, which is a four year graduate course. For admission in this, it is necessary to have Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English subjects in class 12th. This course is considered most suitable and popular for government jobs.
  • GNM whose duration is about three to three and a half years. 12th pass students can take admission in this. This course also gives an opportunity to become staff nurse in government hospitals.
  • ANM which is for two years. This course is considered suitable mainly for working in rural and primary health centers.

Ability

For admission to Nursing course, the candidate must have passed 12th. Science subjects (PCB) are compulsory for BSc Nursing. In most of the institutes minimum 45 to 50 percent marks are required.

Why is registration with Nursing Council necessary?

After completing the nursing course, it is mandatory to register with the State Nursing Council. This registration is proof that the candidate has received training from a recognized institute and is eligible to work as a nurse. Without registration, employment in a government or private hospital is not possible. There are many nursing related posts in government hospitals, such as staff nurse, nursing officer, ward sister and community health nurse. On the basis of experience and promotion, nurses can also get higher positions. With time they can also handle administrative responsibilities.

How much salary do you get?

The starting salary of a nurse in a government hospital can be around Rs 35,000 to Rs 60,000 per month. Apart from this, dearness allowance, house rent allowance and other government facilities are also available.
