Humayun Kabir’s big announcement, will contest elections from two places, can become a challenge for CM Mamata Banerjee too

Humayun Kabir, expelled from Trinamool Congress (TMC) and chief of Janata Unnayan Party (JUP), released the first list of 15 candidates for the Bengal Assembly elections. He told that his party will contest elections on 182 seats in the state. After being expelled from TMC last year, Humayun Kabir has been in the news in recent months for building Babri Masjid in Murshidabad district, due to which political controversy had arisen in the entire country including Bengal.

Will field candidates against Mamata Banerjee

Humayun Kabir said that he has announced the names of candidates for the assembly seats of Malda and Murshidabad districts and will release the complete list on Sunday (22 March 2026). He has also announced to field a candidate from Bengal’s hottest seat Bhawanipur. Humayun Kabir said that she will contest against CM Mamata Banerjee against non-Bengali Muslim candidate Poonam Begum from her party. BJP’s Subhendu Adhikari is in front of Mamata Banerjee on this seat, due to which the entire country is keeping an eye on this seat.

Can form alliance with AIMIM

Humayun Kabir indicated that his party JUP may contest elections on some seats in alliance with Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM. Political analysts say that Humayun Kabir’s decision to field a Muslim candidate in Bhawanipur could also be an attempt to harm the minority vote bank of TMC.

Humayun Kabir will contest elections on two seats himself

Humayun Kabir himself will contest from two seats of Murshidabad district, Rezinagar and Naoda. He will contest the elections separately from his old political stronghold Bharatpur. He had won from Bharatpur seat in the last elections as a TMC candidate. Humayun has given ticket to Bapan Ghosh from Purbasthali North of Purba Bardhaman, Yasin Haider, former son-in-law of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, from Kandi and Syed Ahmed Kabir from Beldanga.

How many candidates were given tickets?

In Malda district, Humayun Kabir’s party has fielded Royal Islam from Ratua, Abdul Minaz Shaikh from Maltipur, Muskura Bibi from Baishnavnagar, Abu Shahid from Manikchak and Naseemul Haq from Sujapur. Other candidates include Syed Khubaib Amin from Bharatpur, Anupam Rohadgir from Behala East, Imtiaz Mollah from Farakka and Bijay Shaikh from Hariharpara. Humayun is trying to give an alternative political platform to his party in Muslim dominated districts like Murshidabad and Malda.
