Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told Reuters in Delhi on Wednesday (October 29, 2205) that millions of supporters of her party Awami League will boycott the elections in Bangladesh because her party has been barred from contesting the elections. Sheikh Hasina, 78, said she will not return to Bangladesh under any government formed after the elections and plans to stay in India.

‘Ban on Awami League unjust’
“The ban on Awami League is not only unjust, it is also suicidal,” Hasina said in an emailed response to Reuters. After being in power in Bangladesh politics for 15 consecutive years, he had to flee from there to save his life last year. This was his first media address since then.
Sheikh Hasina said that the next government should get electoral legitimacy. Lakhs of people support Awami League, so in the current situation they will not vote. If you want an effective political system, you cannot disenfranchise millions of people.
Sheikh Hasina’s party is banned
Actually, there are more than 126 million registered voters in Bangladesh. Awami League and Bangladesh Nationalist Party have been dominating the country’s politics for a long time and BNP is expected to win the upcoming elections. The Election Commission had suspended the registration of Awami League in May. The Yunus-led government had banned all activities of the party citing threat to the country’s security and investigation into war crimes against Awami League leaders.

Sheikh Hasina said that we are not asking Awami League voters to support any other party. We are still hopeful that we will be allowed to contest elections. He did not reveal whether anyone else on his behalf was in secret talks with Bangladeshi authorities to allow Awami League to participate in the elections.
Sheikh Hasina said that she is living independently in Delhi, but she remains alert about the incidents that happened with her family in the past. She said that I would definitely like to go home, provided the government there is legitimate and follows the Constitution.
