‘I am not afraid even if I get death penalty’, why did former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina say this?

Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina once again targeted the Mohammad Yunus government of Bangladesh. He has made a big claim regarding the coup that took place in Bangladesh in August last year. He said that on August 5, Bangladesh was facing massive protests and his stay there was not without danger.

‘My life was in danger in Bangladesh’

Sheikh Hasina also denied the allegations against her that while she was the Prime Minister, she had given permission to open fire on protesters in Bangladesh. She said, “Staying in Bangladesh during the protests last year would not only have put my life in danger, but also the lives of those around me. I am still committed to restoring democracy in the country. As a leader, I ultimately take the responsibility of leadership.”

Serious allegations against Yunus government

In an interview with The Independent, Sheikh Hasina said, “It is completely false to say that I ordered security forces to open fire on the crowd last year. The number of casualties had increased due to a lack of discipline among the security forces on the ground. The government had initially launched an independent investigation into the killings, which was later closed down by the Yunus government.”

‘I am not afraid even if I get death penalty’

He said that he would neither be surprised nor scared if the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh sentences him to death. “The ICT is a sham court presided over by an unelected government comprising my political opponents. Many of them can go to any extent to remove me,” he said.

The movement that started last year in Bangladesh demanding the removal of job quotas soon turned into a nationwide rebellion, due to which Sheikh Hasina had to flee the country. Tajul Islam, the interim government’s chief prosecutor, has described Sheikh Hasina as the mastermind behind the deaths during the student-led uprising.
