A strange case of mistaken identity has come to light in West Bengal politics, where Humayun Kabir laid the foundation of a Babri Masjid-style mosque in Murshidabad, while 200 km away, another MLA with the same name in Debra, West Medinipur, received around 200 calls for donations.
When the suspended Trinamool Congress MLA appealed for donations for the proposed mosque in Beldanga in Rezinagar area of ​​Murshidabad on Saturday (6 December 2025), he would hardly have imagined that after this his party colleague, the MLA from Debra, would start receiving calls. For the past two days, Debra MLA’s mobile phone has been receiving calls from strangers from different states, most of whom are making the same request: give a QR code for donations for the proposed mosque.

Debra MLA said, ‘For the last one week, I have been facing a lot of difficulty in listening to the continuous calls and messages for Humayun Kabir of Murshidabad. This is a case of mistaken identity. A former Indian Police Service officer said, ‘Almost all the people calling want to send money for the Murshidabad mosque. I have to explain again and again that I am not Humayun Kabir of Murshidabad. I am a different person, although both of us were TMC MLAs until they were suspended last week.
He told that calls are coming from Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai, Haryana, Rajasthan and even from abroad. Debra MLA Humayun Kabir left his job as a police officer to join politics in 2021. He said, ‘I usually pick up all unknown numbers. In the last two days, I must have received around 200 such calls.
How much money has come so far for the mosque?
The former minister said, ‘I humbly ask him to find the correct number and contact the second Humayun Kabir directly.’ Debra MLA also clarified her stand on Facebook, and later posted a message which read, ‘Temples and mosques are not arenas for political wrestling, but places of prayer and worship.’ At the same time, according to associates of suspended Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir from TMC, 11 big donation boxes were kept at the venue on Saturday. By Sunday evening, four donation boxes and a bag full of cash were opened for counting, in which Rs 37.33 lakh was found. So far, Rs 93 lakh has been received as online donation through QRcode.
