Neelima Azeem and Pankaj Kapoor’s divorce is one of the most talked about but dignified separations in the Indian film and theater world. Both of them were married in the early 1970s. However, their married life did not last long and finally they decided to separate. During an interview, Neelima spoke openly about her divorce with Pankaj Kapur.
‘No one marries to be separated’
In fact, in a recent conversation with Vicky Lalwani, Neelima said, “I think unfortunately, that’s what was meant to be. No one gets married to be apart, right? They always get married to be together… But I think maybe we were both very different people, and at the same time, marriage is not just about what someone did or what happened. I think it’s about where you are in your mind and where you are in your life. And if it’s The feelings are not the same, so I think this relationship is not good.”
Long-distance relationship became the reason for divorce
Talking about their long-distance relationship, she said, “I think there was a huge distance between us, because he was in Mumbai and I was in Delhi. And I was still that girl who lived in Delhi with her parents, because that was the situation. And maybe at that time it was not a good idea for him to leave me and go to Mumbai, and later, without Shahid.”
However, Neelima clarified that Pankaj had asked her about this step. She said, “I said, go, you are very talented… He was trying to make his place here and I was in Delhi. So I think the distance of years forced us to take different paths.” She further said that from the financial point of view it was not possible for all of them to go to Mumbai together.
No regrets about divorce
She said, “I was very young, so I think it was very difficult for me to handle all this at such a young age… If I look at it from every aspect, I always say this, I don’t know how many people understand it, but I have no regrets because I have Shahid. And the same applies for Ishaan too. So I have no regrets.”
