Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday (3 February 2026) wrote a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, registering serious objection to being prevented from speaking in the House. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has called it against parliamentary traditions and democratic rights. He said in his letter that while speaking on the motion of thanks on the President’s address, the Speaker had given instructions to authenticate a magazine before mentioning it.
What did Rahul Gandhi say in the letter written to Om Birla?
Congress MP Rahul Gandhi wrote in the letter that according to the long-standing parliamentary tradition and many decisions of former Speakers, if a member wants to mention any document in the House, then he has to ensure the authenticity of that document and take responsibility for its content. Rahul Gandhi said that after this process is completed, the member is allowed to mention the document and after that it is the responsibility of the government to reply.

He alleged that barring him from speaking in the Lok Sabha is not only a violation of established traditions, but also gives rise to serious apprehensions that as the leader of the opposition, he is being deliberately prevented from speaking on important issues like national security. He said that national security was an important part of the President’s address, which required discussion in Parliament. In the letter, Rahul Gandhi told the Speaker that as an impartial custodian of the House, it is his constitutional and parliamentary responsibility to protect the rights of every member, especially the opposition.

Describing this as an unprecedented incident in parliamentary history, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said that for the first time, under pressure from the government, the Speaker had to stop the leader of the opposition from speaking on the President’s address. They have registered their strong protest calling it a blot on democracy.
