‘If India starts any work on Chenab-Jhelum then…’, Pakistan got upset after the cancellation of Indus Agreement, then gave a jackal bark

Pakistan on Thursday (January 8, 2026) said that it will take up with it at political and diplomatic level any development activity of India conducted on western rivers in alleged violation of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT). Foreign Office spokesman Tahir Andrabi said the IWT remains a binding international agreement and there is no provision to stop the treaty.

What did Pakistan say regarding Chenab-Jhelum river?

A day after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 last year, India had taken several punitive measures against Pakistan, including suspending the 1960 Indus Water Treaty. Andrabi said that any project built on Chenab, Jhelum and Neelum rivers comes under the ambit of scrutiny under IWT and our Indus Water Commissioner has written a letter regarding some projects on Chenab river.

He said, ‘If some development work takes place in Jhelum and Neelum, then obviously we will take it up with India at the level of Indus Commissioner. We can raise this at the political/diplomatic level with India and also at relevant international forums. Andrabi rejected the statement of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in which he had said that Pakistan has been running training camps to support terrorism for decades.

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi also gave a statement on the ongoing situation with Afghanistan. He said, ‘Pakistan has no bilateral issue with Afghanistan except the issue of terrorism.’

S Jaishankar called Pakistan a bad neighbor

Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar earlier this year described Pakistan as a bad neighbor and said that India has the right to protect its people against terrorism. “Unfortunately we have bad neighbors,” he said. If a country is continuing terrorism deliberately, persistently and without remorse, then we have the right to protect our people against terrorism’
