A statement by Madhya Pradesh Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister Govind Singh Rajput has become the cause of heated debate on social media. His video given in a program in Sagar district is now going viral. In the video, the minister while addressing the villagers says that the work of voter list is currently going on in the village. Everyone should get their names added. This time names are being added in a different way. If your name is not added to the voter list, your ration, water, Aadhar card and many other facilities will be stopped.
People were surprised as soon as his comment came on social media. Many users raised questions whether there is actually a direct connection between the voter list and the benefits of government schemes. According to the video, the minister is further saying that there is still time. Take a day out and get your name added. When my name was being added to the voter list in Jerai village, I myself went and submitted the form.
Minister’s video created political stir
It is being told that this video is of 28th November, but today it went viral on social media, after which the political stir intensified. The opposition has described the minister’s statement as misleading and pressurizing. He says that this is language that creates fear among the people, whereas the government should clearly state that the voter list has nothing to do with government facilities.
Govind is deliberately putting pressure on villagers – Congress
Criticizing the statement, Congress said that Minister Rajput is deliberately putting pressure on the villagers. The opposition argues that it is not mandatory to have a name in the voter list to avail benefits from ration card, Aadhar card, water-electricity connection and government schemes. He said that such statements adversely affect the constitutional rights of the people.
People are demanding clarification from the minister on social media
People on social media are also demanding clarification from the minister on this issue. Many people commented that government schemes are the rights of citizens and voter list is a separate process from it. Some people termed the minister’s statement as a careless choice of words.
However, no written or official explanation has yet come from Minister Govind Rajput after the video went viral. Political experts believe that in an election environment such a statement can create both controversy and misunderstanding. The matter is no longer just about a statement, but the question has started to arise whether government ministers take adequate precautions while giving speeches on sensitive issues or not.
