Amid pressure being put on China by the US on buying oil from Russia, China described its oil imports as completely legitimate and legal and warned that it would take strong retaliatory measures if Beijing’s interests were harmed.
Criticism of America’s unilateral pressure
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told the media that this US policy is unilateral bullying and economic pressure, which weakens international trade rules and endangers the security and stability of global industry and supply chains.
Trade with Russia is completely legal
Lin said that China’s normal trade and energy cooperation with countries of the world, including Russia, is completely legitimate and legal. Responding to the American claim, he said that whether Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured Trump not to buy oil from Russia or not is a different issue, but China will not step back from its natural trading rights.
Trump’s target on India
US President Donald Trump had said in Washington on Wednesday that America is not happy with India buying crude oil from Russia. His argument was that such imports help finance Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war.
America took a tough stance against China
Earlier on Wednesday, America gave a strict warning against China. US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said that US senators could support imposing tariffs of up to 500% on imports from China, especially regarding trade with Russia. Besant told the press conference that 85 US senators are ready to give this extraordinary power to President Donald Trump, so that unprecedented tariffs can be imposed. Besant criticized Beijing for purchasing Russian energy and claimed that such imports were benefiting the Russian war machine.
