Iran’s warning on movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz
Brigadier General Sardar Ibrahim Jabari, senior advisor of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made this announcement. He said, ‘The Strait of Hormuz is closed. If anyone dares to pass, the Revolutionary Guards and Navy personnel will burn those ships.
This warning has come at a time when Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a joint strike by America and Israel a few days ago. Since then, the situation in the Middle East has become very bad.
What is the Strait of Hormuz and why is it special?
This is a narrow passage of the Persian Gulf, through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. From here, oil and gas ships leave from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE and Iran itself. Most of this supply goes to Asia, especially China.
This strait is about 33 kilometers wide at the narrowest part and it connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. The water here is controlled by Iran and Oman, but it is considered an international waterway, where ships have the right to pass. Places like Dubai are just outside it.
If traffic stops here, oil prices may skyrocket. Earlier in February, when Iran stopped traffic in some parts during military exercises, oil prices increased by 6 percent. Iran has threatened many times in the past to close this route, but never closed it completely after the tanker war of the 1980s. At that time Iran and Iraq had attacked ships and laid mines.

Iran took revenge after the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the strike by America and Israel. They fired missiles at countries like Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain, where there are American military bases. Apart from this, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman were also attacked.
People all over the world are wondering what will happen next. Stoppage of oil supply will have a negative impact on Asian markets. Saudi and the UAE have some pipeline routes that can bypass Hormuz, but there is no other route for most of the oil.
