TB i.e. Tuberculosis is counted among the oldest and most dangerous diseases in the world. In India, every year lakhs of people are struggling with this disease. This is especially difficult for those patients in whom multi-drug resistant TB develops. In such a situation, the patient has to take a course of heavy medicines for about 18 to 20 months. Which also has many side effects. But now there is news of relief for these patients. Actually, the Government of India has approved a new technology B-Pal-M regimen. Due to which treatment of MDR TB will be possible in six months. With this technology, not only will the treatment time be reduced but its cost will also be significantly reduced.
What is B-Pal-M Regimen Technology?
The B-Pal-M regimen technology is made up of four medicines. Which includes Bedaquiline, Pretomanid, Linezolid and Moxifloxacin. All these medicines have a direct effect on the MDR TB bacteria and help in eliminating the infection faster. At the same time, this is an oral medicine course, that is, it does not require injection. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research, this technology is much safer and more economical than the existing drug schemes. Apart from this, its most important thing is that the government makes these claims available free of cost.
What is multi drug resistant TB?
Multi-drug resistant TB occurs when TB bacteria become resistant to common drugs such as isoniazid and rifampicin. This situation occurs when patients leave TB treatment incomplete or misuse the medicine. In this disease, the infection spreads slowly and the effect of its treatment also becomes very less. Symptoms of this disease include persistent cough for more than 3 weeks, cough with blood, high fever, night sweats, sudden drop in weight, fatigue, weakness and chest pain.
Central government approved
The Union Health Ministry gave the green signal to the BPALM scheme under PM Modi’s target of eliminating TB by 2025. With this new technology, about 75,000 MDR TB patients across the country will benefit from short-term treatment. According to the ministry, where earlier the patient had to take medicine for 20 months, now the treatment can be completed in only 6 months. Whereas if you take this medicine from a government hospital, it will be made available to you free of cost.
