Protection from mosquitoes becomes a big challenge for everyone during the summer season. The risk of diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya increases. Now the research team of IIT Delhi has found the solution to this problem. The team has prepared a special detergent which protects clothes from mosquitoes as soon as they are washed.
The special thing about this detergent is that it not only does the work of washing clothes normally, but also creates a ‘repellent coating’ on the washed clothes. Because of this coating mosquitoes do not come near the clothes. The research team has also applied for its patent.
How does this detergent work?
Prof. of the team of Textile and Fiber Engineering Department of IIT Delhi. This detergent has been made under the leadership of Javed Nabibaksh Shaikh. Pro. Javed explains that this detergent washes clothes like normal detergent, but after washing, a special layer is formed in the clothes. This layer prevents mosquitoes from coming near. We developed this technology so that people do not use sprays or creams and can remain safe while washing clothes themselves.
Detergent forms and testing
This detergent will be available in both powder and liquid forms. It can be used as normal laundry. Its testing was done in the industry lab and head-in-cage test.
During testing, volunteers covered their hands with a cloth and placed them in a box filled with mosquitoes. The results showed that the number of mosquitoes on clothes washed with this detergent was greatly reduced. The reason for this is that the layer of cloth affects the mosquitoes’ senses of smell and taste. Mosquitoes cannot sit easily on clothes, hence they are not able to bite. With this technique the risk of infection caused by mosquitoes can be reduced to a great extent.
Where can this detergent be useful?
Pro. Javed said that the biggest advantage of this detergent is in schools, rural areas and those places where the number of mosquitoes is high. It is very important to protect children and people from diseases in these places. Our aim was that people could easily use this detergent and not have to take any additional steps to protect themselves from mosquitoes.
Why better than repellent spray?
Existing anti-mosquito sprays or creams often evaporate quickly or require repeated applications. Whereas this detergent remains stable in the texture of clothes, due to which it remains effective for a long time. Moreover, it is a safer option than applying it directly on the skin.
