The students of IIT Kanpur have set an example. Students have proved that even small initiatives can lead to big changes. With the help of just Rs 20 per month, these students are feeding healthy food to 230 needy children five days a week. This initiative taken by the students of IIT Kanpur has been named Panchamrit, which has now become a real nectar for children. At the same time, this initiative is also being linked to children’s education.
The initiative is not only feeding the children but also connecting them with studies.
Many families living around IIT Kanpur campus are financially weak. For the children of these families, Opportunity School is being run in the campus since 1964, where free education is provided. With time, the school administration realized that many children were not able to concentrate on studies, the main reason for which was hunger and malnutrition. Many children used to bring tiffin, but the food got spoiled in the heat and rain. The situation was such that some children even became unconscious during class. When this problem reached the IIT campus, an initiative was taken to find a solution in 2024. On the encouragement of the professors, the students of Hostel 5 took up the responsibility of providing healthy food to the school children, after which a plan was made that the children would be given healthy and simple food like rajma-rice, chickpea-rice and kadhi-rice.

When the calculations for feeding the children were done by the IIT campus, the daily expenditure on cooking food collectively was around Rs 3000. When the calculations for the entire month were made, it was revealed that by adding only Rs 20 per student to the mess bill of about 600 students of Hostel 5, this expense could be easily covered. After this everyone agreed and for the first time in July 2024, hot and fresh food was served to 230 children. Gradually this initiative reached Hall 1, Hall 3, Hall 8 and Girls Hostel 1, where students also came forward to cooperate without hesitation. After this the children started getting food regularly five days a week.
Panchamrit changed children’s health and education
This initiative taken by the students of IIT Kanpur was named Panchamrit, which has become a symbol of collective cooperation. According to school principal Dr. Chetna Mishra, the impact of this initiative is clearly visible. Children are more active and healthy than before and they have started taking interest in studies also. The in-charge of the school, Prof. T.K. Guha says that online consent and objections are sought from students regarding this initiative, but till now no one has raised any objection. All the students are very positive about Panchamrit.
