Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party chief and former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been granted bail in cases related to the violence of May 9. On Thursday (August 21, 2025), Imran Khan’s party leaders and workers are very happy after getting bail in eight cases from the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

According to a PTI report, on May 9, 2023, Law Enforcement authorities detained Imran Khan in Islamabad, after which his supporters vandalized and violence. Imran Khan and many leaders of his party were accused of being involved in these riots and several cases were registered against him.

A three -judge bench of the Supreme Court granted bail after hearing the arguments of Imran Khan’s lawyer Salman Safdar and the state of Punjab, Zulfikar Naqvi. The bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistani Supreme Court Afridi included Justice Shafi Siddiqui and Justice Miangul Aurangzeb.

Imran Khan’s party PTI termed the Supreme Court’s decision in a post on social media platform X. His international spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari said that Imran Khan now needs bail in only one case.

He said, “The Supreme Court has granted bail to Imran Khan in the May 9 cases, now he needs bail in only one more case (Al Qadir case) to come out of jail.” According to Zulfikar Bukhari, the release of Imran Khan is not possible despite the relief due to the conviction in the Al-Kadir Trust case.

Imran Khan filed a petition in a anti-terrorism court in Lahore for bail in cases related to the May 9 riots, but the petition was dismissed in November 2024. After this, he turned to the Lahore High Court, but on June 24 this year, the High Court also dismissed his petition. Subsequently, Imran Khan challenged the dismissal of the bail plea in the Supreme Court.

Several other cases have been registered against former Prime Minister Imran Khan after being removed from the post in April 2022. He has been in jail since August 2023 and is currently serving a sentence in Rawalpindi’s high-security Adiala Jail in the 19 crore-pound al-Kadir corruption case.
