The problem of drug addiction in India is becoming increasingly serious. According to the latest data introduced in the Lok Sabha, the number of drug addicts in Hyderabad’s Drug Treatment Clinic (DTC) has increased by 1300 percent in the last five years. While there were 701 patients in 2020-21, this figure increased to 9,832, while 2024-25 (till January). Experts say that there are many reasons behind this increase, such as easy availability of drugs, cheap prices, increased stress and anxiety and presence of treatment facilities.

What kind of intoxication is the effect?

According to doctors at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH), most of the patients who are caught in the intoxication are accustomed to alcohol, adulterated toddy and cannabis. Recently, when the Excise Department raided toddy bases, the number of patients with withdrawal symptoms suddenly increased. There was a time when about 100 patients were being treated here every day.

Drug web is increasing across the country

Not only Hyderabad, many big cities of the country have also recorded a dangerous increase in drug cases. The number of drug addicts in Indore has increased by 973 percent. This increase in Gokuldas Tejpal Hospital in Mumbai has reached 775 percent, 421 percent in Nagpur and 340 percent in Chennai. These figures are an indication that the problem of intoxication is not limited to only one area, but it is spreading throughout the country.

Causes and danger of drugs

There are many reasons behind the increasing addiction. The biggest reason is easy availability of drugs and alcohol. The second reason is the stress and anxiety among the people after the epidemic, which pushed them towards the intoxication. Apart from this, lack of awareness among people about drug damage and treatment is also a big reason.

The effect of intoxication is not limited to mental health only, it also has a serious effect on physical health. Alcohol and hemp damage liver, heart and brain. At the same time, synthetic drugs like LSD, MDMA can cause diseases like mental disorders, depression and schizophrenia. Continuous intoxication weakens the immune system and increases the risk of accidents.

What is the solution?

Experts say that this problem will not be solved only by increasing detox center. For this, it is necessary to take preventive steps. Awareness campaign should be conducted at school and college level. Mental health counseling will have to be promoted. Strict action should be taken under the NDPS Act. At the same time, family and society will also have to create an associate atmosphere.
