On January 4, 2026, the body of a 12-year-old girl, Srabanti Ghosh, was found hanging in her house in Lalkhan Bazar area of Chittagong. Now Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained two suspects in this case. Police are waiting for the postmortem report to determine whether the death was murder or suicide.
Investigation by detaining two suspicious neighbors
On January 7, 2026, RAB-7 Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tauheed said that on the complaint of the victim’s mother, two neighbors Pradeep and Ajay have been detained. Both were present in the building at the time of the incident. One suspect lives in the next room of the victim’s house and the other suspect lives on the second floor. RAB is investigating his role.
Srabanti lived with her younger brother and mother.
Shrabanti lived with her younger brother and mother in a rented one-room house in Panir Tanki Pahad area. Srabanti Ghosh was a fourth class student and studied at Lalkhan Bazar Government Primary School. Srabanti’s father Tapan Ghosh is a security guard at the Korean Export Processing Zone (KEPZ) and comes home once or twice a month. Mother Rosi Ghosh works in a garment factory.
Shrabanti found hanging from the bamboo of the roof
Mother Rosie Ghosh said that children usually stay at their grandparents’ house from morning till night because the parents are at work. That night, Shrabanti returned home alone from her grandfather’s house at around 10 o’clock while her mother was at work. After half an hour the grandfather brought his younger son and found the door open. When I went inside, I saw that Shrabanti was hanging from the bamboo of the ceiling.
The mother said, ‘Srabanti’s feet were resting on the bed. If there was suicide this would not have happened. She was only a 12-year-old girl, she did not even know the meaning of suicide.
Mark found on Shrabanti’s neck
On Sunday morning, OC Jahedul Islam of Khulshi police station said that the body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for postmortem. During investigation, a black mark was found around the neck but there were no other injury marks on the body. The postmortem report is awaited to know the cause of death.

The picture of this incident has gone viral on social media for the last two days, due to which the matter came into limelight. Some reports have claimed murder and rape, but the official postmortem report has not come yet. Police investigation is ongoing. This matter is very sensitive and a clear picture will emerge only after the investigation is completed. The family and local people are demanding justice.
