Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, caused a stampede outside the stadium during the celebration of the IPL victory. In this stampede, 11 people died tragically and 33 others were injured.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal has expressed deep grief over the accident. He said that the board had no information about the celebration on the field. He described this tragedy as unfortunate and heartbreaking.
Dhumal said in a conversation with news agency IANS, "This is a very sad and unfortunate event. First of all, I express my condolences to those who lost their loved ones. The BCCI had no information about this program beforehand. When I called there to know about the incident, no one inside knew what was happening outside, because there was a lot of crowd. RCB players reached Vidh Saudh to meet Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, shortly after that there was a stampede outside the stadium gate number 2. Whether or not Vijay Parade will be really, the crowd gathered outside the stadium for hours."
Bangalore Traffic Police refused to allow the procession citing mob management concerns, but thousands of people had already gathered to celebrate the team’s first IPL victory.
Dhumal said that this is really very sad. The day of celebration was turned into a wave of mourning. On behalf of the BCCI, I express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. We are very sad that people who came to celebrate became a victim of such a tragedy. As far as the BCCI is concerned, the IPL ended yesterday. All necessary protocols were discussed with the concerned administration.
In a statement, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) expressed deep concern and hearty condolences to the death of the people. The statement said, "RCB-KSCA expresses deep concern and heartfelt condolences about the unfortunate incident during the ceremony organized by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium this morning. We are deeply saddened by the sad death of the people during this incident and the injuries of the people. Our condolences and prayers are with families affected by this incident. We express sincerely on this tragedy and in this very difficult time, the bereaved is standing with the bereaved families."
KSCA announced a compensation of five lakh rupees to the family of each victim. The Karnataka state government has also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family of each deceased.
It is noteworthy that RCB on Tuesday of Ahmedabad Narendra Modi registered a dramatic win of six runs over Punjab Kings at stadium and won his first IPL title after missing 17 years, but this moment of Khushi will now join a terrible lapse in plan and coordination forever.
