Ramraja Temple and Rani Mahal in Orchha city of Madhya Pradesh not only have historical importance, but the tradition here is still alive. This place is adjacent to Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh and here Lord Shri Ram is worshiped as the king.

Both the grandeur and history of the temple make this city a center of attraction for thousands of devotees every year. It is said that in the 16th century, Queen Kunwari had brought the idol of Lord Ram from Ayodhya to Orchha and installed it.

After this, Ramraja is respected like a king. Even today the city police and guards salute at all times every morning. Five uniformed guards give guard of honor to Lord Rama four times throughout the day.

The special thing is that here no VIP, leader or officer is given a guard of honour. Be it the Prime Minister or the President, only King Ram has the right to salute. This is the reason why Orchha is considered to be the only place in the world where God is worshiped as a king.

The tradition of salami in Orchha is about 500 years old. It was started by King Madhukarshah. Since then this tradition has continued continuously.

The city police salutes Lord Ram every day around the clock, whereas as per the general rules, VIPs are not given guard of honor after sunset, but here even after sunset, salute is given to Lord Shri Ram.

This tradition is not limited to religious sentiments only, but it has become a part of the cultural and historical identity of the city. Devotees and tourists come from far and wide to see it and capture this unique salute on camera.
