The increasing addiction of smartphones among school going children has now become a cause of serious concern for many countries of the world. Children are getting so drowning in social media and mobile apps that it is having a direct impact on education. In view of this problem, now South Korea has taken a big step. Here the government has decided that now children will not be able to take their mobile phones and digital devices to the classroom.
This rule will be applicable in all schools across the country and it will be strictly followed from March 2026. It is being said about this decision that this is a way of relief for students, because the constantly increasing mobile habit is overshadowing both the mental health and education of children.
Leaders expressed concern
Leader Cho Jung-Hun, who passed this proposal in South Korea’s Parliament, said that students are active on social media overnight. Especially on apps like Instagram and Tickets, children keep scrolling till late night, due to which their sleep is not complete. As soon as they wake up in the morning, their eyes remain red and fatigue looks clear. It is not only difficult to focus on studies, as well as their mental health.
Already ban in Australia and Netherlands
Prior to South Korea, countries like Australia and Netherlands have also implemented such rules. Australia recently banned social media for teenagers, so that children can get out of the virtual world and focus on real life.
When this rule was implemented in the Netherlands, the schools there reported that the focus of students has increased considerably on studies. The atmosphere of the classroom also improved and the children’s conversations and social engagement were seen to be improved. This is the reason that now South Korea has also moved forward in this direction.
New generations depending on smartphone
About 98 percent of people in South Korea have smartphones and about 99 percent people use the Internet. The Ministry of Education here had conducted a survey last year, in which it was revealed that about 37 percent of the middle and high school students believe that social media is affecting their studies and everyday life.
In this survey, 22 percent of the students also said that when they do not get a chance to access social media, then they feel anxiety and restlessness. This habit is gradually taking the form of a serious mental problem.
