A bomb blast took place in a mosque during Friday prayers in Syria, in which 8 people have been reported killed so far. As soon as information about the blast was received, the emergency team reached the spot and the injured were admitted to the hospital. Syrian security forces have surrounded the entire area and have started investigation.
According to the report of news agency AFP, local official Issam Nameh said that the explosion occurred inside the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque on Friday afternoon (26 December 2025). This time is usually the busiest time for mosques. According to Syrian Health Ministry official Najib al-Nasan, 21 other people were injured. He told that these figures may increase further.
‘Explosives planted inside the mosque’
Pictures released by Syria’s government news agency SANA show blood-stained carpets, holes in the walls, broken windows and fire damage inside the mosque. Quoting security sources, SANA said that initial investigations indicate that explosive devices were planted inside the mosque. According to the Home Ministry, officials are searching for the culprits and a security cordon has been formed around the incident site.
‘The aim of this attack is to destabilize Syria’
Hours after the blast, the Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the terrorist attack, calling it a cowardly attack on humanitarian and moral values. The Foreign Ministry said, ‘The purpose of this attack is to destabilize Syria and test the patience of the people there.’
Syria has seen several incidents of sectarian violence since the ouster of longtime Alawite leader Bashar al-Assad in a rebel attack last year and the formation of a government led by members of the Sunni Muslim majority community. Earlier this month, two American soldiers and a civilian were killed in central Syria by an attacker whom officials said was a suspected member of Islamic State.
