Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia and news of war between Iran and Israel, people’s concern about LPG cylinders has increased in India. Especially the common domestic consumers are anxious to know whether there will be any shortage of LPG. However, the Indian government has clarified that there is no impact on domestic gas supply at present and people should not pay attention to rumours.
In the last few weeks, uncertainty in the international supply of oil and gas has increased due to the conflict between America, Israel and Iran. Iran has claimed that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz and will not allow fuel supply through this route. At the same time, America says that this route is still kept open. Status of LPG consumers in India
As of January 01, 2021, the total number of domestic LPG consumers in the country was approximately 28.90 crore. Apart from this, about 70.75 lakh consumers were also using piped natural gas (PNG). Today the national LPG coverage is 99.5 percent, which means LPG is reaching almost every household in the country. The bulk of LPG consumption and supply is concentrated in a few major states and cities.
In which state of the country LPG cylinder is consumed the most?
The highest consumption of LPG cylinders in India is in Uttar Pradesh, where both domestic and commercial consumers are very high in major districts like Lucknow, Prayagraj, Agra, Gorakhpur and Ghaziabad. This is followed by high consumption in Maharashtra, especially Mumbai and Pune, and the capital region in Delhi. In South India, big cities like Chennai and Coimbatore of Tamil Nadu and Kochi and Trivandrum of Kerala are also big consumer centers of LPG. The demand for LPG is highest in these five states as cylinders are widely used here for both domestic cooking and commercial use.

Top states and districts in LPG consumption
Uttar Pradesh leads the entire country in terms of LPG consumption. This state is known for large scale LPG consumers especially in districts like Lucknow, Agra, Ghaziabad, Prayagraj and Gorakhpur. About 15 lakh consumers in Lucknow, the largest market of domestic LPG in Uttar Pradesh, about 14 lakh consumers in Prayagraj, about 12 lakh consumers in Agra, about 12 lakh consumers in Gorakhpur, about 12 lakh consumers in Ghaziabad. There are approximately 65 lakh consumers in these five districts together, which is a major part of the consumption of the entire state.
LPG supply status
LPG supply remains completely stable in Uttar Pradesh. Oil marketing companies (OMCs) and district administrations have assured that adequate stocks are available and supply chains are fully functioning. There are about 4.83 crore domestic LPG consumers in the state. The average daily domestic LPG demand is around 10,000 metric tons. Commercial and industrial consumption is about 0.5 metric tons per day. There are approximately 4,145 distributors working in the state for LPG distribution, which includes 116 distributors in Lucknow alone. PNG (piped natural gas) is also available on a large scale. There are approximately 20.25 lakh domestic PNG connections in Uttar Pradesh.
