In the third Test match being played between India and England at Lord’s, Team India has received a big setback on the first day. The vice-captain and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant got injured on the ground and had to leave the game and go out. In his place, Dhruv Jurlel was called for wicketkeeping as a substitute. However, now the question is in the discussion whether Dhruv can also bat in place of Jurael Pant?
How did Pant hurt?
On the first day of the Lord’s Test, when the England team was batting, in the 34th over, Jasprit Bumrah hit a ball of Pant’s left hand in an attempt to catch a wide bouncer. After this he was seen in a lot of pain, came to the physio field and after first aid, Pant continued the game for a while, but when the pain increased, he left the ground and could not come back to keep back.
After Pant left, the responsibility of wicketkeeping was given to young player Dhruv Jurlel. He wore gloves and landed on the ground instead of Pant. In the 50th over behind the wicket, he gave India a big success by holding a brilliant catch of English batsman Oli Pope off Ravindra Jadeja.
Can Jurael bat?
The biggest question is whether Dhruv Jurael, who has come as a substitute, can also bat? The answer is no. According to Rule 24.1.2 of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), “No substitute player can bowl or captain. He can only be allowed to take wicketkeeping with the permission of the umpires.”
According to this rule, Dhruv Jurael can only do wicketkeeping, but cannot bat. If Pant does not return to the field in the rest of this Test match, then Team India will have to play the match with a batsman low.
In just one situation, the subsidy player is allowed to bat or bowl and that is the consumption substitute ie the player’s head injury. Because Pant has a finger injury, in this situation this rule does not apply.
Increased concern for Team India
After Pant’s injury, now there is a big challenge before Team India to decide how to fulfill his deficiency if Pant does not play the next day. After the match, when Nitish Reddy was asked about Pant’s position, he said, “I have just come from the field playing and I have no information about it. Hopefully, I will know more till tomorrow.”

After Pant’s injury, an official update has also come from the BCCI, stating that, “Team India vice-captain Rishabh Pant has suffered a left-arm finger injury. He is under the supervision of the medical team.”
During the match, Pant has also been seen repeatedly undergoing treatment with physio near the bench. Now everyone’s eyes are on whether Pant will return to this Test match or not.
