IND vs WI Test Series: The Indian cricket team performed brilliantly by winning the Test series against the West Indies, but what was more talked about than this victory was captain Shubman Gill’s breaking of Dhoni’s tradition. Former Indian captain MS Dhoni had started a tradition that whenever Team India won a series, the trophy was handed over to the newest player of the team. Its purpose was to increase unity in the team and confidence of new players.
Gill broke Dhoni’s tradition
After winning the 2-0 series over West Indies, BCCI shared the video of Team India’s celebration on social media. The video showed that captain Shubhman Gill took the trophy from BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla and handed it over to vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja. The fans were surprised to see this, because everyone expected that this trophy would be given to a new player, as has been happening since the time of Dhoni. Fans raised questions on social media whether Gill ended the Dhoni tradition, this was the culture of the team.
Rohit and Virat also followed this tradition
MS Dhoni had started this beautiful custom during his captaincy tenure that whenever India won a series, he used to hand over the trophy to the new player of the team. Captains like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya also continued to follow this tradition, but Gill’s move seemed different from this tradition for the first time.
However, later the video showed that after Jadeja hoisted the trophy in the air, it was handed over to N Jagadeesan. In this way the tradition was not broken, but was followed in a slightly changed form. First respect to the senior, then opportunity to the new player.
