India-Bangladesh Relations: JDU asked questions in Parliament on India-Bangladesh relations, government gave this answer on issues related to minorities.

During the budget session of Parliament, Janata Dal United (JDU) MPs in the Lok Sabha on Friday (February 6, 2026) questioned the Central Government regarding bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh. Janata Dal United Lok Sabha MPs Giridhari Yadav, Dinesh Chandra Yadav and Rampreet Mandal asked the External Affairs Minister whether bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh were currently going through a sensitive phase. If yes, what are its details?

Also, is Pakistan trying to take advantage of this situation, which could be detrimental to the country, if so, what are the details? Further, has the Government had any discussions with the Interim Government of Bangladesh regarding reports of public killings of minority civilians, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh and if so, the details thereof?

Responding to the question, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh said that India and Bangladesh, as neighboring countries, share deep historical, geographical, cultural, linguistic and social ties. Our bilateral relations are focused on people-to-people development. Many exchanges and meetings are ongoing between the two countries under the institutional bilateral mechanism. India’s support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh has been communicated to the Interim Government in all relevant communications.

What did the minister say on relations with Bangladesh?

The minister said that India’s relations with Bangladesh are independent from its relations with third countries. The Government constantly monitors developments affecting India’s national interests and takes all necessary measures to protect them. India has raised the issue of safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh with Bangladeshi authorities on all relevant occasions, including at the highest levels.

When did the Prime Minister raise the issue?

The issue related to the security of minorities was raised from the Prime Minister’s side in a meeting with Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus on 4 April 2025 and from the Foreign Minister’s side in a meeting with Foreign Advisor Tauheed Hussain on 16 February 2025. The government is constantly monitoring reports related to the security of minorities in Bangladesh. The primary responsibility of the Government of Bangladesh is to protect the life, liberty and welfare of all citizens of Bangladesh, including religious and ethnic minorities.
