Smartphone Exporter: India has topped the US market by beating China in terms of smartphone exports. This information was shared by PIB in which the report of the research organization canalys has been cited. This achievement is a sign of a new flight in India’s manufacturing sector.

Impact of Make in India and PLI scheme

It was told in the post that Make in India and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme have completely changed the picture of the electronics sector. Due to these schemes, India has moved forward in those areas where earlier it did not even go to it as a big producer.

According to Canalys report, in April-June 2025 (Q2), India defeated China in smartphone exports to the US. During this period, the share of the Made in India smartphone in the imports of America reached 44%, which was just 13% in the same quarter of last year (2024). At the same time, China’s stake fell from 61% to 25%.

Historical changes in electronics sector in 10 years

This bounce of India is not a coincidence. There have been major changes in electronics and mobile industry in the last decade. Electronics production increased from 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25 i.e. 6 times increase. Mobile phone production increased from 18,000 crores to 5.45 lakh crores. While a record bounce was recorded in mobile exports, where it was only 1,500 crores in 2014-15, it increased to 2 lakh crores in 2024-25.

Boom in manufacturing units

In 2014-15, where there were only 2 factories to make mobiles, by 2024-25 it increased to 300 units. That means 150 times expansion. India not only increased production and exports, but also almost eliminated dependence on imports. In 2014-15, 75% of the total demand was met by imported phones. But by 2024-25 this figure decreased to just 0.02%.
