Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which won the 13th general elections in Bangladesh, has once again given a big statement regarding the extradition of former Prime Minister of the country Sheikh Hasina. Senior BNP leader and close to party chief Tariq Rehman, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday (February 14, 2026) that his party is hopeful that India will hand over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh. He also emphasized that this matter will not become an obstacle in the relations between India and Bangladesh.
He also made it clear that this entire matter will proceed according to the legal process and international rules. He said, ‘Bangladesh has already requested India to send back Hasina. This entire process will be completed under the rules and international laws.
Bangladesh tribunal has sentenced Hasina
Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina is leaving power and the country and living in India after a large-scale mass movement in the country in August 2024. After this, in November last year, a special tribunal of Bangladesh sentenced him to death in absentia in a case of crimes against humanity related to violent action during the 2024 student movement.
Extradition treaty exists between the two countries: Fakhrul
When Fakhrul was asked in an India Today interview whether the BNP would officially demand his extradition if it comes to power, he said that an extradition treaty already exists between the two countries and if needed, steps would be taken under the same. He said that we would like him to be sent back.
At the same time, on the question of possible impact on the relations between India and Bangladesh, he said that this issue will not become a hindrance in the relations between the two countries. India has never said that it will not send back Sheikh Hasina and the further decision will depend on the circumstances at that time. Expressing hope, he said that time is the biggest solution.
